A review by the Flight Safety Foundation of US heli-logging accidents

Article Abstract:

The Flight Safety Foundation's review of helicopter-logging accidents in the US from 1983-99 has shown that 55% resulted from mechanical failure, with some 27% due to engine failure. About a third of the accidents were linked to human error, and almost 90% of the 83 accidents happened while maneuvering at low or slow speed, usually in the actual hook up and load carrying sector of the operation. A proportion of these, around 24 accidents, followed either the helicopter, the external load, or the cargo cable hitting trees or the ground.
