A roof with a view

Article Abstract:

Building Design Partnership, the designers of the new Number One court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon, England, opted for a circular steel grid-shell roof. This satisfied the requirements for no restricted viewing due to supports, good views over the seating row in front, and an overall height lower than the existing Centre Court. The tubular steel construction resembles a large dish with a central hole. The roof hangs from the back of the terrace, which necessitated rainwater in the gutters having to be sucked uphill by a vacuum system.

Beauty is more than skin deep

Article Abstract:

The huge roof forms the main focus of the manufacturing centre built for L'Oreal at Aulnay la Barbiere, France. Architects Denis Valode and Jean Pistre et Associes have incorporated an inner landscape of water and grass, but it is the circular and undulating roof form which attracts attention. The framework is steel, but there is an outer layer of white lacquer which has functional and cosmetic qualities, and an inner waterproof layer.
