A specification model for product development

Article Abstract:

A specification model is presented for enabling companies to ascertain the vital processes involved in new product development from idea creation to design. The model facilitates the development of a low cost, top quality product by focusing on comparative studies of the specification processes employed by aircraft and automobile Original Equipment Manufacturers. The widest possible input should be obtained to develop the general specification, bottleneck and risk analyses should be conducted and a customer specification should be perceived as the lowest permitted level.

Identifying a market for the new product and establishing any specialized specifications required by customers must go ahead, before product development. The product process must be extremely thorough. Achievement goals should also be identified for new products. The research was based on findings from 161 companies which responded to a questionnaire.

Patterns in the evolution on product competition

Article Abstract:

Groups of products evolve through a series of phases dependent upon market conditions. The nature of the evolutionary development depends upon the individual movements of component products making up the category. Product manufacturers can study the effect of product performance on the evolutionary process of the category to make considered judgements on future product development.
