A stealthy dictatorship smothers Rangoon

Article Abstract:

Foreigners visiting Rangoon, Manmar, may be impressed by the apparent tranquility of its citizens. However, most citizens live in constant fear of informants and arbitrary arrests. The ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) occasionally puts poor people in buses to take them to forced labor camps where they cannot be seen by foreigners. Opposition leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi enjoys majority support, but most citizens are too afraid to even criticize the SLORC's authoritarian ways. Refusal to visit the SLORC-supported new golden temple is the only sign of protest by Myanmar's citizens.

How Confucius reads the Trib

Article Abstract:

Singapore has become increasingly sensitive about perceived criticisms in western newspapers, and has started to create an image of itself as the protector of Asian values. It claims that western newspapers place the rights of the individual above those of the community and ignore important Asian values such as hard work, clean living and respect for authority. However, Singapore may be fighting a losing battle as democracy gains strength in countries such as Taiwan and Thailand.
