Several types of proportional representation systems exist, such as Latin America's largest remainder method and the highest-average system in place in many European countries. Other electoral systems include Germany's additional member method and Ireland's single transferable vote algorithm.

Electoral consequences: the government easily won parliamentary elections in May, but the political system lost

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's Golkar ruling party won 74% of the vote in the May 1997 elections, but such results are not surprising. The 3% showing of the Indonesian Democrat Party (PDI) shows the popularity of Megawati Sukarnoputri and also the decline of the county's political party structure.

Electoral reform: good government? Fairness? Or vice versa. Or both

Article Abstract:

Many democracies that employ some form of the proportional representation (PR) system of government, such as Italy, are considering replacing PR with the UK's first past the post (FPTP) system. The FPTP system does not ensure a strong government, nor does PR preclude one.
