ARMOUR POLYMERS

Article Abstract:

Armour Polymers manufactures organic chemicals. It is affected by an over-capacity in the market, high price of its major raw material acetaldehyde and rising costs of utilities and other overheads. In 1997-98, it launched 2,3 lutidine and 3,5 lutidine used in the manufacture of Lansaprazole and Omeprazole respectively. It is the only company to manufacture these products in India. Its turnaround was due to higher sales of lutidine. Armour Polymers has decided to upgrade the capacity of its plant at Tarapur from 500 tonnes per annum (tpa) to 1,500 tpa of cyanopyridines. The upgradation is being done with the help of Reilly Chemicals SA of Belgium, which holds a 32.4 percent stake in Armour Polymers. It expects to make a turnover of Rs33 crore and a net profit of Rs3 crore in 1998-99. (tsm)
