ASE spreads its chips around: semiconductor-assembly firm takes aggressive acquisition path

Article Abstract:

Taiwan-based company Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. is taking an aggressive acquisitions-based growth strategy. In Feb 1999, it signed a letter of intent for the purchase of two Asian facilities of Motorola Inc. In Mar 1999, it invested US$140 million for a 31% controllership of Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer Universal Scientific Co. As of the first weekend of Apr, it has entered an agreement to acquire 70% of US-based semiconductor testing company, ISE Labs Inc.

TSMC may take stake in Acer semiconductor

Article Abstract:

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is negotiating for a takeover of the semiconductor division of Acer Inc. Industry analysts have said that TSMC, which is the global leader in semiconductor contract production, is seeking to expand capacity while Acer hopes to become more profitable. The world semiconductor market has been hurt by a recent price decline in memory chips, forcing a new wave of consolidation.
