Acer moves into microchips

Article Abstract:

Acer Inc., the largest computer manufacturer in Taiwan, has expanded to make computer microchips, a move that some analysts do not approve. As part of its plan for the new venture, the company requested other investors to double their investment to $79.1 million for the newly-formed company, Taiwan Semiconductor Technology Corp., a microchip packager. The move is part of Acer's expectation that the semiconductor industry would recover in the second half of 1998 and propel to a more rapid growth by 2000.
