AUSTRIA: AGRANA MILLS SECURE UNTIL 2007

Article Abstract:

According to chief executive Johann Marihart, all three mills of the Austrian sugar producer Agrana in Tulln, Leopoldsdorf and Hohenau are secure until 2007-08 as a result of the agreement on the import of goods to the European Union from the world's least developed countries. The works council of Agrana had feared the closing of two of the company's mills. Marihart said, however, that in the medium term 20% of Europe's 160 sugarmills might have to close.

AUSTRIA: AGRANA TAKES EU TO COURT

Article Abstract:

The European Court of Justice is to start hearing a case brought by Agrana against the European Commission, which forbade subsidies to an investment by the Austrian sugar and starch producer. The Austrian subsidies of about Sch 80mn would have contributed about 20% to the modernisation and trebling the production capacity of Agrana's corn starch mill in Aschach, Upper Austria.

AUSTRIA: HIGHER PROFITS FOR AGRANA

Article Abstract:

The Austrian sugar and starch producer Agrana expects a group turnover of Sch 9.77bn in the financial year 2000/2001, up from Sch 9.67bn in 1999/2000. Earnings before interest and taxes are expected to grow by 5%. In the first quarter of the current financial year, Agrana saw earnings before interest and taxes rise 15.6% to Sch 153.4mn.
