AUSTRIA/ASIA: MAYR-MELNHOF TO MAKE ACQUISITIONS

Article Abstract:

Michael Groller, chairman of the board of management, expects Mayr-Melnhof to conclude by the end of 2001 some of the 6-7 acquisitions on which the Austrian board and folding box maker is negotiating. An acquisition of the board division of Asian Pulp and Paper (APP) with plants in China and Indonesia would involve a partner. Beside Asia, Mayr-Melnhof is eyeing small board makers in Europe and sees Russia as an interesting market. Mayr-Melnhof predicts the west European board market to grow at an annual rate of 2% by 2011. Consumption in China is forecast to grow by 6.2%, in the rest of Asia 5.1% and in eastern Europe by 5.1% per year. Mayr-Melnhof has 7 board mills and 18 folding box factories with a combined capacity of 1.4mn tonnes.
