AUSTRIA: BIOCHEMIE KUNDL EXPANDS OVERSEAS

Article Abstract:

Biochemie Kundl, an Austrian subsidiary of Novartis, is considering acquisitions in Latin America. The company aims to increase turnover by no less than Sch 1bn annually. In 1999 the company expects a 5% increase in sales from Sch 8.6bn in 1998. The target for year 2000 is Sch 10bn. Biochemie's new facility at a former Hoechst factory in Frankfurt is to become operative in 2001. Also a new Sch 100mn R&D facility in India is to be completed in two years. At its plants in Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain and Indonesia Biochemie produces ten different substances, of which four are antibiotics.

ARGENTINA: NOVARTIS BIOCHEMIE BUYS LABINCA

Novartis Generics is gaining access to the Argentine market, the third-largest pharmaceutical market in Latin America, by taking over Labinca S.A. through its Austrian subsidiary Biochemie Kundl. The Buenos Aires-based company employs 270 staff and generated a turnover of US$ 46mn in 1999. It is a specialist for oncology treatments and will in future market also the antibiotics of Biochemie. A year ago Novartis Generics acquired the penicillin business of Wyeth Ayerst of the US in 13 Latin American countries.
