AUSTRIA: CHILD BIRTHS TO SHRINK BY 9% BY 2030

Article Abstract:

According to Statistik Austria, the Austrian population will grow to 8.38mn by 2030. However, the decline of the birth rate is accelerating. Statistik Austria expects 71,200 births for 2030, down 9.0% from 78,268 births in 2000. Only in Vienna the number of births should rise by 5.6% to 16,424. The most dramatic declines are expected for Carinthia (-22.2% to 4,011), Styria (-20.2% to 8,512) and Burgenland (-19.2% to 1,783).

AUSTRIA: LONG-TERM DECLINE IN BIRTHS

Article Abstract:

If last year had not been a leap year, the number of live births in Austria would have continued to fall in year 2000. The actual number of live births increased by 130 to 78,268. In the last few years, the number of births has declined by about 3,500 per year. In year 2000 the number of deaths exceeded that of births by 1,488.

Austria's central statistics institute Ostat reports that 77,381 births were recorded in Austria in 1999, down 2,940 from 1998.
