AUSTRIA: POSTBUS WANTS COMPENSATION FOR DEFICIT LINES

Article Abstract:

Postbus, the Austrian public bus transport operator belonging to OIAG, is threatening to give up unprofitable routes if the Austrian federal states will not help to finance them. Postbus plans to successively re-negotiate the expiring contracts with the 12 Austrian public regional transport organisations. Despite rationalisation efforts, Postbus makes losses of Sch 300-300mn annually on the lines in question, which are, however, a public interest. On the other hand, payments from the national administration will be reduced from Sch 100mn in 2000 to Sch 80mn in 2001 and Sch 60mn in 2002. From 2005, Postbus will get no more state funding. Postbus cites the examples of Upper Austria, Salzburg and particularly Vorarlberg, where public transport expenditures are higher than the state's financial compensation from mineral oil tax.
