AUSTRIA: FORECAST FOR MOBILE PHONE SALES

Article Abstract:

About 3mn mobile phones are likely to be sold in Austria in year 2001, compared with 3.5mn units in 2000. About two-thirds of the phones will be sold to existing users. The sales of WAP and GPRS phones in year 2001 might reach about 2mn units. As consumers are prone to swap also the provider when buying a new phone, the country's four mobile phone operators are making efforts to keep existing customers. This involves costs such as those for offering a new phone at a discounted price. The number of new users of mobile phones in Austria in year 2001 is estimated at 1mn, down from 2mn-2.5mn in 2000. It is estimated that at the end of year 2000 there were 5.8mn users of mobile phones. However, the operators announced following figures: Mobilkom 2.8mn, Max.mobil 2.1mn, One 1.15mn and Tele.ring 140,000. The mobile phone penetration rate is estimated at 70%, which is the third-highest figure in Europe.
