AUSTRIA/GERMANY: INVESTMENTS BY LIBRO

Article Abstract:

Austria's leading bookshop chain, Libro AG, is to make investments of Sch 500mn in 1999 and 2000 each. Sch 100mn is to be spent on expanding internet business . Another Sch 100mn will go to expansion in the German states of Bavaria, Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia. Small acquisitions are planned there. Libro is planning to enter the German market also with the internet service and is already in talks with TV stations and newspapers. The on-line service wants to offer local contents in Germany. Libro expects to raise up to Sch 1.27bn by going public.

AUSTRIA: TELEKOM TO BUY LIBRO INTERNET PROVIDER?

Article Abstract:

Telekom Austria's internet subsidiary Jet2Web will gain 70,000 new clients if Telekom takes over the internet access provider business of Lion.cc, the subsidiary of Libro . Lion's Free & Easy Box is said to be Austria's fourth-biggest internet access provider and the leading e-commerce portal. Telekom has confirmed that it is in talks about taking over Free & Easy Box, for which it provides infrastructure services. Lion.cc is working on plans to set up a separate internet contents company. To that effect it is negotiating with ET Multimedia and other potential partners.

AUSTRIA: UTA, LION.CC COOPERATE IN E-COMMERCE

Article Abstract:

Austrian fixed-line communication and Internet provider UTA is in "serious" cooperation talks with Lion.cc, the online subsidiary of the insolvent Libro group. The cooperation should start before the Christmas business, but involve no capital links. UTA's subsidiary Netway could cooperate with Lion.cc with regard to the Internet portal and e-commerce logistics. Initially, products such as books and CDs could be offered. With regard to further takeover speculations, UTA head Romed Karre emphasised that the company is on a consolidation course, unless very good opportunities should arise.
