AUSTRIA: GROWTH IN TELEPHONE TRAFFIC

Article Abstract:

Heinrich Otruba, head of Austria's Telecom Control, sees little scope for a further fall of prices in fixed-line telephony, in contrast to mobile telephony. Since the deregulation of the telecoms market, the prices of local calls in the fixed-line network in Austria have fallen by about 80%. The prices of calls from fixed-line networks to mobile phones have fallen by about a half. Meanwhile, the prices of calls between mobile phones have remained largely unchanged. On the whole, call prices in Austria are about the European Union's average. In year 2000 Austrians made calls totalling 17.5bn minutes, up from 13bn minutes in 1999. However, turnover in this sector fell from Sch 27.5bn to Sch 26.4bn. On average, each Austrian made 2,910 minutes of fixed-line calls last year. Call minutes through mobile phones increased from 4bn to 7bn minutes in year 2000, while turnover surged to more than Sch 25bn.

AUSTRIA: VODAFONE UPS STAKE IN TELE.RING

Article Abstract:

OBB and Verbund have sold their stakes in Tele.ring to Mannesmann/Vodafone, which already owned 53.8% of the stock of the Austrian telecoms company. Between them the Austrian national railway company and the big power company held 25.6% of Tele.ring stock. The German/British group is expected also to buy back the 21% stake in Tele.ring it sold to Citycom. It is believed that thus Vodafone is paving the way for the divestment of its fixed-line telephony activities.

AUSTRIA: MAX.MOBIL COMPLAINT AGAINST TELEKOM

Article Abstract:

Max.mobil has lodged a complaint with Austria's Telecom Control Commission against Telekom Austria (TA). It maintains that the former monopoly is charging its clients more for calls to the mobile phone network of Max.mobil than for calls to the network of the TA subsidiary Mobilkom Austria. Since August 2000 the interconnection fees have been the same in both cases.
