AUSTRIA: HEALTH INSURERS LOSE ON REFORM

Article Abstract:

Austria's health insurance funds estimate that they will gain additional revenue of about Sch 300mn as a result of the government's decision to abolish free health insurance for spouses without children in 2001. It is estimated that about 30,000 people, who so far paid no contributions, will contribute 3.4% of the gross income of the insured spouse, towards statutory medical insurance. Originally the additional revenue had been estimated at Sch 850mn. The health insurers say that at the same time they are faced with additional payments to hospitals worth Sch 1bn per year .

AUSTRIA: DOWNTURN IN PHARMACEUTICAL SPENDING

Article Abstract:

In the six months to March 2001, Austrian statutory health insurers' spending on pharmaceuticals sold through public pharmacies declined 4.7% in real terms compared with a year earlier. For years, the spending had been growing at an annual rate of about 8%, which is around the European average. In 1998 and 1999 the spending increased by about 14%. The decrease in the last 6-month period is explained with the fall of pharmaceutical prices, lower margins and a decreased number of prescriptions by doctors.
