AUSTRIA: SPAR TO TAKE OVER MEINL FOOD OUTLETS

Article Abstract:

The Austrian retailer Julius Meinl gives up its former core sector, food retail trade. The remaining outlets are to be sold to Spar. Meinl is to retain only the flagship store Meinl am Graben in Vienna. After the cartel authorities prevented the sale of the whole chain to Billa in 1998, Meinl planned to convert the 95 stores in eastern Austria into gourmet stores like Meinl am Graben. The retailer has already spent a significant sum on the modernisation.
