AUSTRIA: LESS PUBLIC FUNDING FOR THE POST

Article Abstract:

Austria's infrastructure minister Michael Schmid has indicated that state subsidies for the mailing of newspapers and publications of associations, societies, political parties and other interest groups will be reduced considerably. The Post wants Sch 1.3bn for forwarding such mail. Until now it has been paid Sch 900mn per year by the state, and no more than Sch 450mn is allocated for year 2000. The Post says that it suffered a loss of Sch 850mn with this service in 1998 and 1999. Daily papers account for a "low percentage" of the 9,400 printed titles that are forwarded by the post at discounted rates.
