AUSTRIA: LOWER AUSTRIA REJECTS SEMMERING TUNNEL

Article Abstract:

The government of Lower Austria has rejected the plan of HL-AG on the construction of the Semmering railway tunnel. The decision is based on the negative outcome of an environmental impact study. According to Lower Austria's environment minister, the tunnel had to be rejected due to hydrological and juridical grounds related with environmental protection.

Austria: RZB proposes cross-border leasing for railways

Article Abstract:

Raiffeisen Zentralbank (RZB) is proposing the Austrian railway operator OBB a cross-border leasing instrument to finance railway infrastructure. The bank estimates that if this instrument was used on the line between Linz and St. Michael, OBB could save up to Sch 500mn on a volume of Sch 10bn. The benefit would come from exploiting the US tax benefits.

Austria: Sch 25bn per year for infrastructure

Article Abstract:

Austrian minister for transport has announced that the government will provide Sch 25bn per year for the extension of the railways and roads. The sum is to include Sch 13bn for the country's road network and Sch 12bn for the rail network. The government is to present detailed plans for the infrastructure in January 2002, following a period of consultation with the provinces.
