AUSTRIA: GROWTH IN INTERNET USAGE

Article Abstract:

According to the Austrian Internet Monitor (AIM) by the market research institutes Fessel-GfK and Integral, about half of Austrians over 14 years of age have access to the internet, while 44% actually use it. Since the beginning of 2001 the number of users has increased by 300,000 to more than 3mn. 36% of those interviewed in the first quarter of 2001 live in households with internet access, while 21% use the internet from work. The usage rate is highest in the age group 14-19, at 86%. Of people over 60, no more than 7% use the worldwide web. 53% of men and 36% of women use the internet. The main purposes of using the internet are the search for information (named by 57% of users), private e-mails (49%), web-surfing (41%), professional e-mails (37%), SMS (31%), music download (20%), software download (19%), on-line banking (18%), chatting (16%), news groups (16%) instant messenger services (10%), games (7%), videos (7%) and shopping (6%).

AUSTRIA: CAPITAL MEASURES AT TRIGON

Article Abstract:

Trigon Bank AG, which got into trouble in 1999 , is to reduce its share capital from Sch 186mn to Sch 93mn and then raise it again by Sch 50mn to Sch 143mn. The shareholders' meeting on 31 August 2000 should also decide on approved capital of Sch 71.5mn. It is still open where the fresh capital will come from, after talks with potential investors from Georgia failed. For year 2000 Trigon expects a small profit on the operating level.

AUSTRIA: FORECAST FOR COMMERCIAL INTERNET

Article Abstract:

A study by Forrester Research predicts turnover with internet applications in Austria to increase by a factor of 17 by 2004. In 2001 the turnover is forecast to reach Sch 37bn, which corresponds to 37% of overall trade turnover in Austria. More than 90% of the turnover is generated in the business-to-business segment. Commercial applications such as electronic banking and internet shopping account for no more than 4% and 1%, respectively, of Austrians' internet usage.
