Austria: Sales of mobiles decrease

Article Abstract:

This Christmas 500.000 Austrians are to get a mobile phone as a gift, 30%, down on a the Christmas season of 2000. Mobilkom, the leading company dealing with mobiles, is happy with these results as it had expected sales to drop even more given that over 80% of the Austrian population already have a mobile phone. Only around 30% of mobiles sold are equipped with GPRS. In 2001 most of the Mobilkom's growth came from foreign countries. In Slovenia, Croatia and Liechtenstein in particular the company has found many new customers. Insiders speculate about a possible stock market flotation of Mobilkom. As Boris Nemsic, the company's director has said, this depends on the decision of the company's owners, Telecom Austria and Telecom Italia. In general, Nemsic argued, Mobilkom would be ready for such a move even if Telecom Italia, which owns 25% of shares, left the alliance. The fact that Telecom Italia might drop out has also been speculated by insiders.
