AUSTRIA: MOBILKOM REMAINS THE LEADER

Article Abstract:

Mobilkom Austria is to make investments of Sch 3.3bn in year 2000, compared with Sch 2.8bn in 1999, and retain its leadership on the Austrian mobile telephony market. In 1999 the company gained 750,000 clients. With a total of 2.3mn clients, Mobilkom held 52.9% of the Austrian mobile telephony market. Max.mobil gained 720,000 new clients and One 450,000 clients. Mobilkom's turnover increased 25.8% to Sch 16.657bn, while profit remained unchanged at about Sch 3.5bn. With a mobile phone penetration rate of about 50%, the growth of the Austrian mobile telephony market is expected to slow down in year 2000. About 1.4mn new clients are expected, of whom about 450,000 are likely to buy a WAP phone.

AUSTRIA: MOBILKOM GPRS JOB TO MOTOROLA, KAPSCH

Article Abstract:

Motorola's Austrian arm and Austria Telecommunication (AT), a subsidiary of Kapsch, have won a multi-million contract to set up the network infrastructure for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) for Mobilkom Austria . From summer 2000, initially 2.4mn clients will have access to the high-speed data services. Beside internet-based services, Mobilkom will focus on navigation systems, information services and telematic services used by mobile phone. Motorola and AT are to provide a sufficient number of compatible mobile phones.

AUSTRIA: MOBILKOM LAUNCHES GPRS

Article Abstract:

Mobilkom Austria launched general packet radio service (GPRS) on 2 August 2000. It claims to be the first operator of an extensive, commercial GPRS network worldwide. Depending on the time of day and contract type, Mobilkom's charges are from Sch 0.49 per minute upwards. Mobilkom spent Sch 120mn on making the 3,700 base stations GPRS-compatible. GPRS phones will not be available on a larger scale on the Austrian market until in mid-August 2000. The first phones will allow transmission speeds of 30 kb/s, while in the longer term the network will allow speeds of 171 kb/s.
