AUSTRIA: KLM TO COMPETE AGAINST RHEINTALFLUG

Article Abstract:

The Austrian regional airline Rheintalflug is buying two Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft. From January 2000 when the first plane is delivered, the Austrian regional airline can cut flight time between Vienna and Altenrhein (Switzerland) from 90 to 60 minutes. With the new planes, the airline is hoping to increase the number of passengers by 10% from 65,000 annually. Each of the planes costs US$ 16.9mn and takes 50 passengers. From 31 October 1999 KLM Alps is to start daily flights on the Vienna-Friedrichshafen (Germany) route, which was tested and abandoned by Rheintalflug. The regional airline of the Dutch carrier is hoping to gain 30,000 passengers on the route in the first year. It will operate the route with a 31-seat Fairchild-Dornier 328 three times a day during the week and twice daily at weekends. In March 1999 KLM Alps started serving the routes Amsterdam-Innsbruck and Amsterdam-Salzburg. The load factors are 59% and 65%, respectively. It has sales offices in Innsbruck and Bregenz.
