AUSTRIA: PRICE CUTS FOR FIXED-TO-MOBILE CALLS

Article Abstract:

Effective from 01 Mar 2000, Telekom Austria will reduce its fees for calls from the fixed network to the mobile networks of Mobilkom (A1, D) and One. Calls to Mobilkom mobiles will cost Sch 3.17 per minute, down 28%, calls to One will cost Sch 4.22 per minute, down 14.13%. Calls on weekends will be reduced to Sch 2.64 and Sch 3.52 per minute. The different prices are due to the different interconnection fees charged by Mobilkom and One. The prices for calls to max.mobil will not be reduced, because the negotiations for lower interconnection fees failed. The Telecom Control regulation authority is now looking into the matter.

AUSTRIA: NEW CEO ON TELEKOM AUSTRIA

Article Abstract:

Heinz Sundt, new director general of Telekom Austria, has detailed the streamlining programme that should make the former state monopoly fit for the stock exchange. The structure of call rates in fixed-line telephony will have to be modernised. Moreover, Telekom Austria will introduce a number of new services, focusing especially on combining fixed-line and mobile telephony and internet. The number of Telekom staff is to be reduced by almost 30% from 15,500 at present. This will take place through early retirement and golden handshakes. Activities such as Telekom and Mobilkom shops, customer service, information technology and call centres may be outsourced. The internet activities of Telekom Austria and its subsidiaries Mobilkom and Datakom are to be hived off into a fully-owned subsidiary. Mr Sundt would not disclose details.
