AUSTRIA: OBB TO BOOST CARGO TRANSPORT

Article Abstract:

The supervisory board of OBB has approved the founding of a new company to run a wagon pool. OBB is in advanced talks with a potential partner for Industriewaggon AG, which will be capitalised at Sch 300mn and which will become operative at the beginning of 2001. It should be one of Europe's four leading private wagon hire companies. Initially Industriewaggon will have a parc of 7,000 wagons, but the number is to be raised to 20,000. In January 2001, the supervisory board is to decide on another two subsidiaries for the cargo division of OBB, a forwarding company and a locomotive pool. OBB aims to raise turnover in the cargo sector to more than Sch 20bn, to which foreign operations should contribute more than 70%. In 2000 OBB expects to see a 10% increase in cargo transport volume from 85mn tonnes in 1999. Turnover is expected to grow 4%, while costs are rising at a steeper rate.
