AUSTRIA: OLD TANKS TO PAY FOR HELICOPTERS?

Article Abstract:

Austria's defence minister Herbert Scheibner has decided to exempt 170 combat tanks from the prohibition to sell abroad arms of the Austrian defence force, the Bundesheer. The defence ministry is offering for sale 170 M-60 combat tanks from the 1960s as well as ammunition and simulators, expecting to raise about Sch 300mn. The maintenance of the tanks costs a few million schillings per year. Sikorsky has indicated that it could take the tanks in part-payment if it wins the contract to supply 12 transport helicopters to the Bundesheer. The US company's UH-60 Blackhawk is seen to have better chances than the Cougar of Eurocopter to win the contract, the decision on which is to be taken in July 2000.

AUSTRIA: STUDY RECOMMENDS EUROCOPTER

Article Abstract:

A report by Wifo, the Austrian Institute for Economic Forecasting, rates the offer of Eurocopter to supply new helicopters to the Austrian defence force, the Bundesheer, better than that of Sikorsky, which was so far seen as the favourite. The report judges that the direct effects of both offers to the Austrian national economy would be equal. However, the Eurocopter offer involves bigger annual counter purchases over a 10-year period. Both offers involve 200% compensation purchases. The report also points at unexploited export potentials in France.
