AUSTRIA: ORGANIC PRODUCTS BY BILLA

Article Abstract:

The Austrian supermarket chain Billa continues to record double-digit growth rates with its organic line "Ja! naturlich". The products generate an annual turnover of more than Sch 2bn. Billa claims 70-75% of the Austrian organic products market. The company says that 3% of customers go to Billa only because they want the company's products. According to a spokesman, no other brand reaches such a high rate. Billa admits that the organic meat it introduced in 1999 has not turned out to be very successful. On the other hand, demand for organic chicken exceeds supply despite the fact that it costs twice as much as regular chicken. Also sausage and finished products are successful. Billa has great problems in getting sufficient supplies of vegetables. Organic products account for one-third of milk and yoghurts sold by Billa.
