AUSTRIA: PARLIAMENT PASSES FINANCE CONTROL LAW

Article Abstract:

The Austrian parliament has passed a law on the reform of the supervision of the financial markets. From 1 April 2002 there will be just one supervisory organ for banking, insurance, pension funds and securities. The entity will be subject to the ministry of finance, since the government failed to win the two-thirds majority that would have been required for introducing a totally independent financial markets watchdog. The new law strengthens the powers of supervisory boards of banks and introduces stricter liability rules for auditors. In future banks will also have to change auditing company every six years.
