AUSTRIA: VOEST-ALPINE MILL CLAIMS LEADERSHIP

Article Abstract:

In October 2000 the Austrian steel maker Voest-Alpine Stahl AG is to bring on stream a new compact steel mill in Donawitz, which it claims to be the most modern long products mill worldwide. With the new facility VA Stahl claims not only technological but also cost leadership. The Sch 2bn mill allows a 10% reduction in production costs and an improvement of annual results by Sch 429mn. VA Stahl's long products division has been making profits since 1993. Last financial year it generated a turnover of about Sch 9bn, while the result improved marginally. Due to improved quality from the new mill, VA Stahl will seek to expand in new markets such as the automotive industry and fastening technology. Austria Draht generates almost 40% of its turnover with the automotive industry. Annual turnover is to be raised by Sch 300mn. Also due to the new mill, about 50 workers are likely to be made redundant. Altogether Voest-Alpine is looking for alternative employment for a third of the 1,000 staff in Donawitz.

US: VOEST-ALPINE PLANNING RAILS PRODUCTION

Article Abstract:

Voest-Alpine Stahl AG of Linz (VA Stahl) is considering alternatives for the production of rails in the US. Beside Nucor, which is considering to start making rails in order to raise capacity utilisation, the Austrian company is in talks with Bethlehem Steel, Birmingham Steel and SDI. VA Stahl might either grant a licence for the production of rails with hardened ends to one of the US steel makers or set up a joint venture, in which it would hold a minority stake. A decision is to be taken by March 2000. VA Stahl claims world market leadership in ultra-long seamless rails. Voest-Alpine Schienen GmbH of Leoben/Donawitz makes rails with lengths of up to 120 metres.
