Ace in the hole: Taiwan's Acer makes surprising comeback in America

Article Abstract:

The US branch of Taiwan's Acer computer maker has turned around its stagnant market position with aggressive marketing and an emphasis on flexibility. Acer America's sales reached $851 million in 1994, with revenues doubled from 1993, and market share rose from 1.7% to 2.5%, making it the #9 computer vendor in the US. It anticipated the demand for home systems with Pentium chips and multimedia equipment, as did Packard Bell. An initial public offering for the US subsidiary should take place by 1997.

Appetite for chips: Samsung bites into U.S. hi-tech

Article Abstract:

Samsung announced in late Feb its purchase of 40% of US computer maker AST Research for $378 million. The Korean high-tech firm has long sought a market outside Korea's, which it dominates, while AST offers the vision and global reach Samsung offers but needs cash. AST also gets a ready source of various computer components. The deal may move Samsung into the global high-tech market, but analysts are skeptical about how well the two management styles will mesh.
