Plastic explosive: Singapore complains to WTO about Malaysia

Article Abstract:

Singapore has ignored the traditions of the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) by approaching the nascent World Trade Organization over a dispute with Malaysia. In Apr 1994 the latter imposed strict new barriers to plastic resin imports in an effort to protect its new resin maker, Titan. As the biggest supplier to Malaysian plastics companies, Singapore was hurt most, and 10 Malaysian plastics companies have since failed. Malaysia has modified its requirements, but Singapore claims the changes are inadequate.

War of words: Malaysian tempers flare at Singapore's merger talk

Article Abstract:

Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's prime minister, has criticized comments made by Tony Tan, the deputy prime minister of Singapore, on the rejection of a re-merger between Singapore and Malaysia. Malaysia's New Economic Policy favors Malays in an attempt to give them parity with better-off minorities. The Singapore People's Action Party (PAP) faces an election and critics argue that it is seeking to gain votes by arousing fears among ethnic Chinese that they would lose out by not voting for the PAP.

Musing on Malaysia; people surprised at Lee Kuan Yew's merger idea

Article Abstract:

Former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew suggested that it would be possible for Singapore to reunite with Malaysia under certain conditions. Lee made the suggestion in response to a reporter's question. Politicians in both Malaysia and Singapore were surprised at Lee's suggestion but did not rule out the possibility. Analysts note that the two countries have followed very different political agendas since they separated in the 1960s which would be problematic to reconcile.
