Afterlife: Exiled doctors continues fight for China's orphans

Article Abstract:

Dr Zhang Shuyun became the centre of controversy following the publication of the book Death by Default: A Policy of Fatal Neglect in China's State Orphanages, and the television documentary, The Dying Rooms. She left China in 1995 to settle in Britain because of persecution in China. In Britain she continues to put pressure on the Chinese authorities to give orphans some dignity. She has set up the Chinese Orphans Welfare Concern group, which meets with governments and non-governmental organizations in many countries to raise awareness about the plight of Chinese orphans.

Deep impact

Article Abstract:

Acupuncture is becoming increasingly acceptable as a form of therapy in the US. Over a million clients a year use the services of around 10,000 acupuncturists, and the National Institutes of Health has given a cautious endorsement of the value of acupuncture for some medical conditions including asthma and back pain. Some health experts continue to oppose acupuncture as a valid therapy and the scientific reasoning behind any efficacy is unclear, but some theories are beginning to emerge. Regulations governing the practice of acupuncture vary from state to state.
