Alacatel d sign pour tisser le c ble transpacifique

Article Abstract:

The French group Alcatel has won 40%-50% of the US$ 1.1bn contract to supply a 21,000 km underwater transpacific telecommunications network linking Japan and the USA. Alcatel will work alongside the Japanese firms NEC, Fujitsu and KDD-SCS. The link, which is being created to respond to the sharp rise in telecommunications between the two countries, will have an 80 gigabits/second capacity, capable of carrying 968,000 simultaneous conversations. The capacity will eventually be raised to 640 gigabits/second, or 7.7mn simultaneous conversations. Alcatel will supply a section of the underwater cables and the land-based terminals, and all of the interconnection equipment, which will permit high debit transmission. The contract was awarded by a group of 12 operators: AT&T, BT, Cable and Wireless, Japan Telecom, KDD, Level 3 Communications, NTTWN, Pacific Gateway Exchange, Qwest, SBC, Sprint and Worldcom.
