Alitalia pleads for big job cuts, moves to split airline in two

Article Abstract:

In the hopes of staving off bankruptcy, Italian airline Alitalia Linee Aeree Italiene S.p.A. is seeking approval from its workers to cut nearly a quarter of its employees and split its flight operations from its debt-ridden ground-service operations. Unions recognize that in accepting Alitalia's request they could be seen compromising their clout; failed negotiations, however, could lead the airline into government-appointed administration or liquidation within a matter of days.
