An introduction to contemporary cryptology

Article Abstract:

Cryptology is currently a hot topic, not only to researchers and government security agencies, but also to business and the public at large. An overview of cryptology is provided that divides the subject into cryptography and cryptanalysis. The goal is successful transmission of secret information, while assuming that an enemy cryptanalyst has access to the encrypted information. Cryptosystems are generally either secret-key, with the encrypting and decrypting data known only to the originator and receiver of the data, or public-key, illustrated by the descriptions of the Diffie-Hellman public-key-distribution system and the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman public-key cryptosystem. Cryptographic protocols, encryption, and cryptographic management strategies are described. Protocol formulation has become a very active area of cryptologic research.
