Allied opts for champagne

Allied Domecq PLC confirmed that it will not bid for Seagram Co.'s wine-and-spirits unit, in an auction by Vivendi Universal S.A. that is seen as a unique opportunity for spirits companies to attain great brands. Instead, Allied is opting to purchase Mumm and Perrier-Jouet champagne brands for Euro575 million from Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, a U.S.-based private equity firm.

London holds on to top spot in ranking of equities centers

The city of London is still the world's largest equities center, even though New York is gaining and could take the top spot next year. In 1999, investment management companies in the greater London area had almost $2.4 trillion, according to the 2000 International Target Cities Report.

NFC sells Allied to U.S. investment group

NFC PLC has reached a deal to sell its Allied Van Lines unit to North American Van Lines Inc.'s owner, Clayton, Dubilier and Rice Inc. The investment group is acquiring Allied for $450 million (432.1 million euros).
