Olivetti managing director Roberto Colaninno has until the end of the year to raise 367 billion lire to make up loses that occurred in 1991-1995. The Italian government is reluctant to step in despite the fact that Olivetti is a major employer. Olivetti should have shed its failing personal computer business long ago.
