Alternative architecture

Article Abstract:

Alison Chippindale is development worker for the community architecture co-operative, Groundworks. She promotes the services of her co-operative and seeks to extend the traditional 'open door' approach to a more proactive involvement with localgroups. Chippindale works to involve other organisations and to obtain funding for building projects like youth centres, community buildings and health centres. She believes community architecture is a special skill and does not imply a lack of professionalism, the architect's role is both to interpret and to suggest improvements to the users' ideas.

The original enabler

Article Abstract:

Edward Burd is a partner in the architectural practice, Hunt Thompson which pioneered community architecture and tenant empowerment. The practice was formed in 1971 and did its first public contract in 1974. The involvement with tenants groups started in 1982 with the rennovation of Lea View House, Hackney, London, England. The architects treated the tenants as if they were private clients and asked what they wanted. This approach has developed into a concern for the building's performance in use. Burd sees himself as a communicator and practical problem solver.
