China's National People's Congress (NPC) is holding its annual meeting and the Mar 2000 session has includes criticisms of Taiwan, where elections are scheduled for Mar 18 2000. China is also increasing spending on defense, though China is not yet seen as a threat in terms of an invasion of Taiwan. There have also been moves against corruption, which have affected high officials. China has seen a dramatic slowdown in its economic growth rate, and no target has been set for economic growth.

China's worried boss
Article Abstract:
Chinese prime minister, Zhu Rongji, is seen as able to bring about economic reform by westerners, but he has been criticized at home for making major concessions and still not achieving Chinese membership of the World Trade Organization. He may retain his post of prime minister while losing control of policy, and this has already occurred to some extent in economic policy. He does' however, retain popular support, and his policies are similar to those of the rest of the leadership.
