Trouble on the home front

Article Abstract:

There has been an article in an Arizona paper questioning whether John McCain would be a suitable president due to his political skills and approach and temperament. Arizona has attracted migrants from the east coast and California and the state is not typical for the US. McCain aims to beat George W. Bush in Arizona's primary, but there is no certainty that he will achieve this. National news media are becoming more important than local media, so a home advantage can be undermined. McCain will have to invest in securing a victory in Arizona, leaving less for campaigning elsewhere.

The underdogs start snapping

Article Abstract:

John McCain, Republican, and Bill Bradley, Democrat, have had a major influence on the US presidential race, which has lacked the attempts at character assassination common in past races. Bradley is on the political left, and McCain on the political right, yet both are concerned about inequality. They are also seen as honest and authentic, and are benefiting from a reaction against sleaze associated with President Bill Clinton. There is also a move favoring political responsibility, and there are no major domestic issues since the economy is performing well.

The man who healed the Vietnam wound

Article Abstract:

John McCain may be a divisive influence in the Republican party, but has a healing influence in the US as a whole, by stressing public service and his time in Vietnam. This fits a mood created with the movie 'Saving Private Ryan' by Steven Spielberg, and the book 'The Greatest Generation' by Tom Brokaw. McCain places Vietnam in a wider tradition of US military service, and he was tortured rather than killing people. McCain may be defeated in his bid to achieve the Republican nomination, but will have helped to restore faith in public service.
