SmithLKline seals two divestments for Glaxo Merger

Article Abstract:

SmithKline Beecham PLC will divest two of its medicine brands, Famvir and Kytril, to Novartis AG and Roche Holding Ltd. respectively. The divestment is part of a requirement by federal authorities before they approve the [pound]50 billion (81.72 billion euro) merger between SmithKline and Glaxo Wellcome PLC.

Novartis's buy of Roche stake is unlikely to shake up sector

Roche Holding Ltd.'s sale of a minority share of itself to Novartis AG is not expected to have a major impact on the pharmaceutical sector. Novartis acquired 20% of Roche for 4.83 billion Swiss franc (3.13 billion euros).

An about-face on life-sciences model; Novartis, AstraZeneca to spin off agrochemicals

Article discussing the statements made by Novartis AG chairman, Daniel Vasella, and AstraZeneca PLC chief executive, Tom McKillop, that the strategy of "life sciences" is no longer useful. The two pharmaceuticals executives proposed the spinoff and merger of their agricultural divisions into a new company, called Syngenta AG.
