An accessible and exciting youth centre

Article Abstract:

The Base 51 youth centre and health facility in Nottingham, England has been designed to attract teenagers with a vibrant, dynamic conversion of a disused factory. The interior rooms have been positioned at angles around a large communal, multi-purpose space. Bright colours and changing designs of walls and ceilings, lighting and windows add to the informal atmosphere. The centre houses a clinic as well as social facilities, a creche, cafe and offices. There was a close partnership between the client and the architect.

It has been converted from the Grade 1-listed Royal College of Art (RCA), and the work has included restoring a large part of the original structure.
