Stelios Haji-Ioannou founded a small airline, based in the UK, and is booking flights at about one-third the cost of competitor British Airways. The no-frills EasyJet flights have become popular. He runs his operation in a manner similar to that of ValuJet.

United Airlines' 1994 employee buyout has made it the world's largest employee-owned company and appears at first glance to be a major success. It has its problems, however, including wage fights with its pilots and the disgruntlement of flight attendants, who did not participate in the buyout.
