Architecture schools face looming recruitment 'crisis'

Article Abstract:

Younger architects must be attracted into the teaching profession to ensure there is an adequate reserve of knowledge available to educate the next generation of UK architects. This is the conclusion of the Association of University Teachers who found a high level of older teaching staff in the 36 architect teaching facilities and an extreme shortage of younger staff being employed to take their place when the older members of staff came up for retirement. Architect teachers claim many of their members are part-timers and therefore not reflected in the report's findings.

Designs on property: commercial reality is the watchword of Valerie Owen, head of the architecture division of real-estate adviser Jones Lang Wootton

Article Abstract:

Valerie Owen is founder and head of Jones Lang Wootton's architecture division. She believes that the architectural profession would win more respect if they became more focused on commercial matters and that training should include the economic context. Owen pioneered restoration techniques to stiffen timber binders, with Alan Baxter and Associates. Since joining Jones Lang Wootton, Owen has expanded the architecture department, concentrating on fast-track space planing and refurbishment projects.
