Are Germany and its leader bouncing back?

Article Abstract:

German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, is using populist rhetoric to combat lack of enthusiasm for his reform program from some quarters, but a stronger tone is accepted by Germany's partners, and there is little fear of German nationalism. There has also been some economic recovery, though unemployment, at 10.5%, is worryingly high. Unemployment and low productivity are problems in eastern Germany. The government has been strengthened by the establishment of a loyal and efficient team, while the Christian Democrats in opposition have to tackle a party-finance scandal.

Schroder's woes

Article Abstract:

German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, has carried out a tax reform project, but faces protests from those affected such as pensioners and farmers. There are also division within the Social Democratic party. Schroder has become less popular according to polls, and regional state elections and municipal elections scheduled for late 1999 could see a drop in support for the Social Democrats. Schroder could lose his post as head of his party if he is not able to assert his authority.

Gerhard Schroder, embattled chancellor

Article Abstract:

German chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, faces a number of challenges, such as the poor performance of his Social Democratic Party in regional elections. Legislation on self-employment and part-time work could destroy jobs. Schroder has to stand by his budget package, and regain control of the divided Social Democrats, if he is to stay in command. He has a number of young allies, and there does not appear to be a rival from the political left.
