Article Abstract:

Hong Kong art-film director Ann Hui's focus is social sensitivity, as illustrated in her latest release, called 18 Springs. The movie is based on a novel by Eileen Chang, set in prewar Shanghai, and features Leon Lai and Wu Chien-lien. Born in China in 1947, Hui worked in television before beginning her directing career in 1979. Her first international success came in 1982 with Boat People and Hui became known as one of Hong Kong's leading 'new wave' directors.Hui has always insisted that the films she makes are meaningful to her and she often tackles subjects that others avoid.

Wayne Wang a Hong Kong filmmaker with a western orientation is filming a picture about inter-racial romance within the context of international politics. The film is about the return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule and its impact on the lives of an Asian girl and her western lover.
