Astra at the apex: car maker accelerates into first

Article Abstract:

Astra International passed Indosat to take top honors in Far Eastern Economic Review's third annual REVIEW 200 survey to determine corporate leaders in Indonesia. It also led in two categories, and subsidiary Toyota Astra Motor took the No 3 slot. Astra is diversifying rapidly, making agribusiness, financial services, infrastructure, and telecommunications important elements of its business. Ciputra International, which rose from nowhere to take fifth place overall, is concentrating on its property development operations.

And still champion

Article Abstract:

Car manufacturer Astra International remained the leading Indonesian company in 1996, with its subsidiary Toyota Astra Motor being ranked in second place. Observers have considerable respect for the company's management team, but there is speculation about its future, especially with regard to a possible separate listing of its agribusiness and financial divisions. There is also concern about the very ambitious profit projects for 1996 and 1997. Other leading Indonesian corporations are discussed.

A whole new Astra: but many wonder what the new owners are up to

Article Abstract:

Astra International shares rose dramatically in early Sept 1996, and after two months of speculation, almost 51% of the company is now in the hands of a consortium headed by Mohamad Hasan, a Suharto associate. It is expected that the company will be restructured, and there is speculation that its assets will go toward helping Indonesia's floundering national car programme.
