Au revoir Alouette

Article Abstract:

South African Air Force is looking for a suitable replacement for its aging Alouette III helicopters. The three candidates for the requirement are Agusta's A109M, Eurocopter's EC 135 military variant, designated as EC 635 and Bell's model 427. The chosen helicopter will be assigned to four local mixed helicopter squadrons to complement the medium-weight Oryx, and the Helicopter Flying School. The helicopter, which will be in the 3,550-kg maximum gross weight category, is to engage in a variety of tactical operations, including light transport, reconnaissance and search and rescue.

Rooivalk comes of age

Article Abstract:

Denel has developed the Rooivalk attack helicoper for the South African Air Force. The nine-ton aircraft is powered by twin Turbomeca Makila 1K2s, developing 1,420 kW continuous power and up to 1,573 kW at the 30 second rating. Rooivalk weapons include a 20-mm cannon that carries 750 rounds and capable of firing up to 740 rounds per minute. It can also be equipped with Kentron Mokopa anti-tank guided missiles and Matra BAe Dynamics Mistral air-to-air missiles.

Victory strike

Article Abstract:

More than 2,000 US soldiers and 60 soldiers from V Corps participated in the bilateral US/Poland military field exercise for attack helicopters and advanced long-range artillery assets called Victory Strike. The exercise was conducted between Oct 13, 2000, and Oct 23, 2000, in Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland. Victory Strike was intended to provide realistic training to attack aviation units while rapidly deploying V Corps headquarters and its support elements.
