Kevin Rudd, the new prime minister of Australia, is expected to make his mark on foreign policy. He is expected to put global warming on top of the agenda, relax the strained relations between Australia and Indonesia, and address power balances in Northeast Asia.

The Australian elections will be observed closely the world over. The preferential system of polling makes the elections extremely close to the actual public psyche. The election result can change economic and social policy drastically.
